Tales narrated by still images and motion pictures

Líviusz Gyulai, who is turning 80 years old this year, has been known both in Hungary and worldwide since the age of 35, when he published his images inspired by Hungarian poet Sándor Weöres’s legendary work ‘Psyche’. The stylistic virtuosity with the help of which he created his world of images, thereby bringing the late poet’s literary work and the images he produced to equal ranks, all of a sudden placed him on a level equal not only to Hungarian artist Mihály Zichy, who illustrated Hungarian poet Imre Madách’s ‘The Tragedy of Man’ but also to Aubrey Beardsley, who created drawings to accompany Oscar Wilde’s play ‘Salome’. He was skilled as far as his every movement was concerned: he was talented in using fine pointing and sharp contrasts, in producing energetic line drawings and also in making delicate brush strokes. In fact, the graphic designs showcased in Pesti Vigadó enchant their audience by offering genius changes in perspectives and presenting exciting changes of style.

We seem to feel the artist’s friendly handshake greeting us and calling us to carry on with the creation: dear reader, dear visitor; you may have drawn this line yourself, you may as well have placed this spot right here. The naturalness evident in Líviusz Gyulai’s book illustrations and in his animated cartoons is captivating. Seemingly diverse themes: Szindbád and governess Gertrúd, Captain De Ronch and the well-known nasty kid writing his diary, let alone the emblematic alterago of Jonas; whatever the topic is, Líviusz Gyulai finds the perfect forms and techniques to suit them all, and yet in all cases he remains completely true to his own artistic self.
